The movie the Time Traveler was an interesting look at the idea of time travel. The main character travels far into the future to see what happens to the human race. He learns that it was almost destroyed by war, and that now the world is populated by two groups, the surface dwelling peaceful people and the men who live underground. He is shocked to find out that the surface dwellers are bred like cattle to be slaughtered. With the help of the surface dwellers he destroys the vermin living underground and once again travels back in time. When he returns to the past and tells his friends, they refuse to believe him. Frustrated he goes back to the future to live with the girl he loves.

The most interesting thing i have learned about sci fi this semester would be the concept of paradox. I was interesting thinking about what would cause these paradoxes in time. I  began the semester thinking that scifi was limited to aliens and time travel, but now i know that there is so much more.  My favorite unit was the time enders game unit because we got to make a video project and the book was a good read.

A sound of Thunder, you Zombies, and Into the Universe

A Sound Of Thunder: This story focuses on the idea of the butterfly effect. When a man goes back to the far past, he steps on a butterfly on completely wrecks the future. This is an extreme example of the butterfly effect, as it is unlikely that something that small would have that large on an effect. However, it does provide a good example as to what the main idea of the butterfly effect is.

All You Zombies: This was just a strange story. To think about him being his own mother, father, and bartender, causes a large headache. He is an example of Paradox, as there is no beginning or end to him. I did enjoy the addition of the oruoborous ring, but that was because I am fascinated by the early studies of alchemy and know the backgrounds behind it.

Into the universe: Wasnt in class that day, but from what I know about Steven Hawking, I imagine that he gave a detailed hypothesis onto how time travel into the future is possible, but not the pat.

Carl Sagan, a noted author, talks about the theory of time travel. Behind all of his long statements, he is basically saying the same thing as everyone else.
Time Travel into the future is possible
The past is another story
Nature could possibly stop all paradox's from occurring
There could be alternate universes, but maybe not
Yes, all he does is sum up what we have been talking about this entire unit. And in the end, he really doesn't give his opinion on anything, saying that there is no point when we have such a lack of knowledge on the matter.

I, Borg

In  this star trek episode, a Borg is captured/ rescued by the crew. They decide to use this Borg in order to destroy his race by implanting a virus in his system. However, as they experiment of him, they find that without the Collective, he functions similarly to a normal human. Realizing that he is a man, they decide to not infect him. He then chooses to go back to the Borg in order to allow his new friends to escape.

The version of the Frankenstein complex portrayed in this episode is different from what we have seen before. In this case, a species has made themselves into a collective of robots and travels the universe searching for species to assimilate. Man kind is fearful of these creatures because they have no free will, and are thus the ultimate form of punishment for a human.

In the episode of the X-Files Post Modern Prometheus, a creature is created by scientific means and is born a monster. It is a disgusting sight and it terrorizes the town, leading to the formation of a mob and the attempted killing of the creature. Of course it cannot have a realistic ending so the creature proves that it is not as evil as everyone thinks and is let go. It seems that the people forgot that two women had been raped by the monster, but hey, he said he was sorry so everything is good. It was the classic Frankenstein story, and should tie in nicely with our study of the Frankenstein Complex.

In the short story Random Sample, a little girl is observed by alien visitors. They give her simple tests to see how intelligent she is, but she intentionaly fails them to make them angry. Later, her and her brother destroy the alien ship and show the aliens how to kill ants. The aliens, who apperently love life, are disgusted by the show of evil and leave. The girl is enterviewed by a psychologist about what happens, but the aliens decide to destroy man because of her cruelty. This time, the aliens are xenophobic of man because of their cruelty.

In The King Of the Beasts, an alien race look at an exhibit of different extinct animals. The final exhibit is that of a single man, whom the fear the most out of every animal they have. This story infers that man destroyed themselves and an alien race took over earth.

In the film "Planet of the Apes", the Apes are the dominate life form on the planet Earth. They lead similar lives to that of man, but when a man crashes to earth with the ability to speak and write, they are horrified by his presence. The Apes are afraid of the unknown, and when some of the Apes support the man they are shunned and accused of heresy.

Within the "Planet of the Apes", there is a distinguished class system that the apes live by. Depending on what type of Ape they are, they will either be a warrior (Gorilla), a keeper of the faith (Orangutan), a scientist (Chimpanzee), or be a man and be considered an animal. It appears that not all the apes are created equal because the Orangutans seem to hold all of the power whole the other species do as they are told.

When a leader is blindly followed, they will lie to the people they are supposed to protect. In the case of the Apes, they are all under the illusion that man is a lower life form because the Faith tells them to. When any of the Apes speak out against the Faith, the are charged with heresy and punished.

In the episode of the twilight zone "the monsters are due on maple street, a group of simple citizens are thrown into chaos when they believe aliens have invaded their street. They experience a sever case of Xenophobia when they believe one of them is in fact an alien. They become quick to judge and are dead set in believing one of them is a monster. This shows that even the idea of aliens causes us a humans to go into a state of panic and can even cause us to turn against one another.

In the short story Muse, a man and "slug" use one another to get what they want. In this world, the aliens are more excepted than in other stories, but there is a group that treats them like demons. This group is so obsessed with this notion that they kill the slug. They do not realize that the slug is in fact the talent behind the mans skill as a guitar player, and that by killing it, they have ended his career.

Ender's Game Blog 2

Life at the battler school is hard on Ender. He has managed to exhibit his strength and will by passing the Giants Drink, and he has proven he is smart enough to hack into the desks and create his own security system. Still, even though he is able to beat the big kids at a Game, the two mysterious people who speak at the beginning of the chapters do not reward him, they seem to make things even harder. Now Ender must stretch his will even further to survive this harsh school.

Ender's Game Blog 1

In the first five chapters of Enders game, we are introduced to the main character Ender, a young boy who is the third born child in his family. Ender is incredibly smart, and his brother, Peter, and sister, Valentine, are of equal intelligence. The difference with Ender is that he takes the strong violent side of Peter and combines it with Valentines compassionate love. This is what has made the military interested in Ender, and what makes them invite him to the battle school. To succeed at the battle school, Ender will have to be an extraordinary leader, smart enough to out think his fellow students, and have a will strong enough to survive the stress of life away from home.

Blog post 8

The short story Puppet Show asks the question of how deeply the human race is immersed in its pride of itself. When the alien life form comes to the town and tells them of the test for xenophobia, they believe they have passed the test to enter the federation. However, the true test is to see if they are able to except that something that is not human could be smarter than them. when the alien reveals that he is in fact the burro, they fail the true test. Humans greatest sin is pride, and this is what keeps the human race from advancing to its greatest potential.

Ferocious planet

The entire story of ferocious planet is to show extrapolation./ Everything that the crew and the scientist own is futuristic and unbelievable. From death rays to robot servants, there is nothing that this new world does not have. Yet even with all this technology, the race of beings that once lived there was wiped out. This brings up the question as to what advances actually give you. They did not protect the beings who once lived there, and they caused the human to act suspiciously.

There will come soft rains

The short story "There will come soft rains" by Ray Bradbury fits the our definition of science fiction because it deals with a house that uses advanced electronic to serve its masters, even when they are dead. The house could be considered a form a robot, and even when its purpose for surviving, its family, is disintegrated with the rest of the towns population, it strives to do as it was programed. This story has many forms of extrapolation, the main component being a house that cooks, cleans, and reads for its inhabitants. I personally enjoyed this piece, partially because it seemed that the house truly loved its family, even though it was just following its programing.

Homelanding and Cause and Effect

In the short story Homelanding, a human describes what earth is like to another species. The sci fi elements found in this piece include an alien life form and traveling to a different world. In the episode of star trek the next generation, titled Cause and Effect, The crew of a space ship are trapped in a never ending time loop. The sci fi elements in the episode include space travel, alien life forms, and time travel. The reason that these two pieces may be a good intro to sci fi is that they contain many elements of science fiction, not just one. Together they outline what we will be studying in this class. These two pieces hold up to my definition of sci fi because of the use of aliens, time travel, and space voyages. I felt that these two pieces where a decent user of time, but the star trek episode caused some annoyance with the repeating of the same day over and over.

Science Fiction Blog #1

My name is Jaden Gardner. I live in a two story home with my father, mother, and two sisters. My hobbies include the study of religious fiction and criminology. I am unfortunately part of the band program and have been for 4 years. I am a senior and am looking forward to starting college at metro state next year. My paramount moment in sci fi would be my first viewing of the TV show Startgate SG-1. To me sci fi is defined as the imagined vision of the future or possible events that may occur. It is a work that of fiction that substitutes magic for scientific advancements.
